Washing Your Hair Too Much (or Too Little)? A Dermatologist Finally Clears It Up

If your hair starts looking greasy just a day after washing, you’re not alone. Many people wonder whether they should shampoo again or wait it out a little longer. While it’s often said that washing your hair every day isn’t ideal, the real answer depends on your hair type and daily habits.

Washing too often can lead to dryness, breakage, and split ends, says Dr. Heather W. Goff, a professor in the Department of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. To settle the debate, we asked a dermatologist how often you should actually be washing your hair.

How often should I wash my hair?

There’s no one-size-fits-all rule. How often you should wash your hair depends on several factors, including how often you exercise, how much styling product you use, and most importantly, your hair texture.

Curly hair tends to dry out faster and is generally more fragile. Because it’s more prone to breakage, Goff recommends washing curly hair no more than once a week, or even once every two weeks in some cases.

If you have finer hair, washing every two to three days is usually best. Goff notes that going longer than a week without washing fine hair can increase the risk of scalp issues like seborrheic dermatitis, commonly known as dandruff.

Is it OK to wash your hair every day?

If possible, daily washing is best avoided. Hair is made of keratin, a strong protein, but frequent washing can still leave it dry and prone to damage.

Washing too often strips away sebum, the natural oil that protects your scalp and hair. This can lead to an itchy, dry scalp and brittle ends over time. Goff compares it to washing your jeans every day. Eventually, the fabric becomes worn, frayed, and thin.

Why is my hair greasy after one day?

Greasy hair often comes down to genetics. Oil production is influenced by androgen hormones, which increase after puberty. These hormones stimulate oil glands, much like they do in people who are prone to acne.

If your hair gets oily quickly, constantly washing it may not be the best solution. Instead of stripping away natural oils, Goff suggests using dry shampoo to absorb excess oil between washes. Just be sure to thoroughly cleanse your scalp on wash days to prevent product buildup.

Does washing your hair cause hair loss?

Washing your hair does not cause it to thin. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it’s normal to shed 50 to 100 hairs each day.

Periods of noticeable shedding, known as telogen effluvium, are usually linked to stress, illness, or hormonal changes. If shedding continues for a long time or you’re worried about hair loss, seeing a dermatologist is a smart next step.

How to wash your hair like a pro?

A few simple habits can make a big difference in hair health:

Apply shampoo to your roots, not your ends. The scalp is where oil and buildup collect. Shampooing your ends can make them overly dry and more likely to break.

Apply conditioner to your ends. Focus conditioner on the lower half of your hair rather than the roots. If your hair breaks easily, using a deep conditioning mask occasionally can help restore moisture.

See a dermatologist for ongoing scalp problems. Persistent itching, redness, flaking, or irritation could signal contact dermatitis or conditions like psoriasis. A dermatologist can help identify the cause and recommend the right treatment.

Finding the right washing routine may take some trial and error, but understanding your hair type and scalp needs can go a long way toward healthier, stronger hair.
